  • Thoughts on imitations

Trying to think outside the box for a moment.

Sewin feed on various forms of sea life, we normally presume small fish and shrimp/prawn, same as for salmon.

Yet the snake, I think, represents sand eels which I am sure are a major prey item - as does the collie dog fly especially when fished on the surface creating a v-wake, like the natural.

I often think that a bunch of worms is successful because it looks like a cuttlefish head - yet we rarely seen patterns that imitate cuttlefish which surely must be a major prey item. And does anyone use crab flies?

Has anyone tried such imitations? Do you ever think of what you are imitating in choosing a fly?

    Wotcher,

I've used sandeel and elver impressionistic patterns, along with shrimps of course, but I tend to go for something big, generic and tasty looking rather than try to go overly imitative.

I've posted a few examples up in the fly pattern thread.

    Regards,

    Jon
