Ok, this may be an useful list for those hoping to expand their collection or for those entering the magical World of sea-trout fishing that would like to explore the plethora of books at their disposal. What I am proposing is twofold:

1. In this thread we just list the books.
2. We create separate threads for each book, with each book incorporating a review by forum members. What you comment on and how you structure it is up to you, e.g. exploring pros and cons, how modern the data is, grammar/typos etc.

Let's keep this thread to these parameters:

Surname, Name, year of publication (and/or edition), book name.

All kept in alphabetical order.

No matter if there are a few editions, let's get them listed. e.g. a starting example would be:

Falkus, Hugh. 1962 (1st edition). Sea-Trout Fishing.

Books may also be included if they have a significant chapter/s on sea-trout, or sea-trout fishing i.e. many of the old salmon books would have a sporadic chapter or two on sea-trout.

Something to keep us occupied throughout the cold, winter months!!

Now for a collector, or Sewin nut who wishes completeness in his Library I believe the '62 first edition is valid, however the later Revised 2nd edition is a much bigger, totally revised book of much more use to the Angler.

I would suggest the Revised Edition as a purchase - very closely followed by his Biography, Hugh Falkus: A life on the Edge, by Chris Newton, a must read for those too keen to 'pedestal' a talented but intrinsically flawed human. This Biography would be a good read even for those with no interest in fishing.

How about;

Jarrams, Peter. 1987. Sea Trout Run.

Waltham, James. 2006. The Sea Trout and the Fly.

Ok, great, this seems to be working and there's some interest in following it through.

Have had a further thought regarding the second stage i.e. the individual review. If we create a separate thread for each book then we can attach a poll to run alongside it where each forum member can vote towards the popularity/usefulness of the book. It may even give some of us the incentive to read, re-read, or purchase some of these books. I will create the first as an example based on SJF’ review of Chris Newton’ book above to see what you think, and have something to start the proceedings with.

Thanks,

TT.

Right then; the five I'm going to mention fall into the above bracket, although they have significant sea trout content - perhaps worthy of a seperate list as this catergory could run into the hundreds?

Brooks, Joe (Joseph W Brooks Jr) 1964 First Edition 'A World of Fishing'

Buller, Fred & Falkus, Hugh Revised Edition 1988 'Freshwater Fishing'

Mottram, J.C. (no date) First printing 'Thoughts on Angling' pre 1945 as Dr.Mottram died that year.

Russell, Keith February 1993 Trade edition. 'Sex and Fly Fishers'.

Schwiebert, Ernest 1988 First edition. 'A River For Christmas'.

I would be happy to review any of the above for this Forum.
Joe Brooks' work covers his pioneering visits to Argentina as well as visits to several Welsh sewin rivers. Yes he called them sewin. He had a 3 pounder from the 'Klothi' and some from the 'Teiffi' (both his spelling) including a coracle netting outing at Cenarth.
Keith Russell's sea trout is all on Tierra del Fuego's Rio Grande, but it's none the worse for that.
Ernest Schwiebert's sea trout input is unique as he also covers the rivers of Chilean Patagonia in detail.

Great additions, thanks a lot Salmonella! |\

I agree with you; with so many books having sections dedicated to sewin/sea-trout, it would be wise to have a seperate section for them - perhaps with a little detail of where and what is covered?

We can keep this section for the 'pure' list, then the other for the aforementioned 'type'.

Thanks for the input.

Hi everyone. Just to let you know that I am in the final stages of having a book published which gives the patterns for all the classic (featherwing) sea trout flies. The book will be inexpensive but good quality.

Good luck with it.
You'll have to let us know the launch date of this publication, so that we may cast an eye over it.
