  • Towy all-rounder

    I was experimenting with tying sea trout flies with a thicker body this evening and have tied up a few Towy all-rounders, some with golden pheasant tips and some with yellow schlappen (I think I prefer the pheasant).

    Now that I see them on the stand I can't help thinking they look more like salmon flies. Has anybody had success with this fly when night fishing for sewin on the Towy or Teifi?

    The flies in front of the stand were tied by my 6-year old, and he was keen to show them off too.

    Materials:
    Hook: Ken Sawada silver Spey, size 6
    Tail: yellow schlappen or golden pheasant
    Body: black seal fur
    Rib: silver wire
    Hackle: black schlappen, tied false
    Wing 1: red arctic fox
    Wing 2: Peacock sword
    cheeks: jungle cock
    head: red floss, UV-cured epoxy resin

    They look great im sure they will catch no problem at all
    As for looking like salmon flys there are loads of patterns that cross over IMO
    And I've caught more sewin on salmon flys than salmon

    Your child's flys are better than my efforts {;

      The 'Towy Allrounder' is pretty much John / terry (senior) Graham's 'Black Ghost'. Those men caught more sewin than any other fishermen I know and they used the 'Black Ghost' a lot. John still does. It will certainly catch you Sewin. Hope that helps.
